What is Black Poetry Day?

Black Poetry Day, celebrated on October 17, honors the incredible contributions of Black poets throughout history. This day commemorates the legacy of Jupiter Hammon, the first published African American poet, born on this day in 1711. It’s also a time to celebrate the works of poets like Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, and many more who have enriched literature with their powerful voices.
